DECK RESTORATION GEELONG

Deck Restoration Geelong

We bring grey, tired decks back to life: wash them, sand where they need it, fix loose boards and nails, then oil, stain or paint. Because we are carpenters first, the repairs happen before the coating goes on, not after.

THREE FINISHES

Oiling, staining or painting your deck

The finish you pick changes how the deck looks and how often it needs doing again.

Oiling

Oil soaks into the timber and brings its colour back, and suits hardwoods like merbau and spotted gum. We wash the deck with a timber cleaner, sand back the rough spots and put on two coats. A deck that cops the afternoon sun needs it again sooner than one in the shade.

Staining

A stain adds colour as well as protection, to even out mixed boards or shift the tone. Where there is an old coating we strip back to bare timber first, so the new stain soaks in evenly instead of sitting on top of the old one.

Painting

Some decks, mostly treated pine, are painted. We sand back flaking paint, replace the boards past saving and paint the lot, with the carpentry and the paint done by the one team. When we replaced two boards on a Torquay deck, we painted them to match the rest.

WHAT GOES WRONG

What goes wrong with deck finishes, and how we fix it

Grey, dry boards

Sun breaks down the surface of the timber and turns it grey. A timber cleaner and a wash bring the colour back up before any oil goes on.

Peeling or patchy finish

A new coat over an old film peels with it. We strip the old coating back to bare timber, then start again.

Black marks and mould

Shady, damp decks grow mould and go black between the boards. We wash it off with a timber cleaner before coating.

Nails lifting through the finish

Raised nails tear up sanders and bare feet. We punch them down or re-screw the boards before the first coat.

HOW IT WORKS

How a deck restoration runs

We look at the boards

What is on the deck now, how weathered it is and whether any boards need replacing.

A quote for prep and finish

The repairs, the prep and the product, all on the one quote.

Fix, punch, wash, sand

Boards refixed, nails punched, the deck cleaned and sanded where it needs it.

Coats on, deck back

Two coats, three on a hard-working deck, and we tell you when it is ready to use.

FROM OUR JOB BOOK

Deck restorations we have done

Sanded back in Geelong West

Nails punched and boards re-screwed, the deck sanded to bare timber, washed with Intergrain Reviva and coated in Intergrain UltraDeck. The shade panelling was re-screwed and stained to match. 2022.

A busy deck restained in Geelong

Loose boards refixed with longer screws, the old coating stripped with Aqualis Strip Ease and the timber prepped. We put on three coats of natural decking stain rather than two, because the deck faces north and takes heavy foot traffic. 2023.

Three deck jobs in Barwon Heads

Between 2019 and 2022: decks washed, sanded where needed, nails punched, and coated in Intergrain UltraDeck.

Two decks in Torquay

One washed with Intergrain Reviva and given two coats of UltraDeck in 2023. Another washed and stained, stairs included, in 2021.

A front deck in Leopold

Restained in the same visit as lining and painting the verandah ceiling. 2024.

RESTORATION QUESTIONS

Deck restoration: common questions

How often should a deck be oiled?
It depends on the timber, the product and how much sun the deck gets. A north-facing deck needs it sooner. When water stops beading on the boards and the colour has faded, it is due.
Should I oil, stain or paint my deck?
Oil if you want the timber’s own colour back. Stain if you want to even out mixed boards or change the tone. Paint mostly suits treated pine that has been painted before. We tell you what suits your boards when we look.
Can a composite deck be restored?
Composite isn’t oiled. It gets a clean with the board maker’s recommended cleaner, and any damaged boards are replaced.
Do you fix loose boards before the coating goes on?
Always. Loose boards get refixed, nails get punched and broken boards get replaced first, so the new finish isn’t covering a problem.
How long before we can use the deck again?
We tell you on the day, because drying time depends on the product and the weather. Plan to keep furniture off it until the last coat has dried.
