We build new decks across Geelong in hardwood, treated pine and composite boards: decks off the back door, decking laid over an old concrete slab, and custom shapes around planters, seats and steps. One crew does the frame, the boards and the finish.
Most new decks are one of these three, and plenty are a mix.
A new deck starts below the boards. We set the footings, stand the frame on galvanised stirrups so the timber stays clear of the ground, and space the joists for the board you choose, because many composite boards need closer joists than hardwood. Then the boards go down and get their finish.
A tired concrete patio or a set of old pavers can take a deck on top. We lay a low frame over the slab, keep the water draining underneath, and leave lift-out hatches over any drains or pits so they can still be reached.
Curved edges, seats built into the deck, planter boxes, wide steps and landings. We mark the shape out on site with you, so you can see it before a board is cut.
We build with all of these, timber and composite, on the same well-built frame. What changes is the look, the upkeep and the joist spacing.
We lay WoodEvo, a composite board with a timber-look texture, certified for use up to BAL-29 in bushfire-prone areas. It needs no oiling, so it suits a deck you would rather sweep than maintain.
Australian made and owned since 2001, from recycled wood and plastic. We lay ModWood on new decks, garden seats and planter boxes, and straight over old pavers.
We lay Ekodeck, a composite made from bamboo and recycled plastic. It comes in a small set of colours that can be mixed for a two-tone deck or a border.
We lay NewTechWood, a capped wood-plastic composite: a polymer shell around the core resists stains, fading and moisture. The boards clip down with hidden fixings, so the top of the deck stays free of screw heads.
We lay Millboard, which is not a wood composite at all but a resin and mineral board moulded from real timber, so it carries a convincing grain and won’t rot or warp. It goes down the same way as any other board, on a frame set out to its span.
A dense hardwood with a deep red-brown colour, and one of the timbers we lay and oil most. It bleeds tannin for the first few weeks, which can mark paving below, so we plan for it before it goes down.
An Australian hardwood with a wavy grain and colours from pale grey-brown to chocolate. It is hard-wearing and rated for use up to BAL-29.
The budget board, and the timber under most of our deck frames. Treated pine boards need recoating more often than hardwood, but they take stain and paint well and are easy to replace one at a time.
A pale south-eastern Australian hardwood with a straight grain. A good choice where you want hardwood without the red of merbau.
Bearers and joists built too close to the ground stay wet and rot from the top. We keep the frame up on stirrups with air under it, and tape the tops of the joists so water doesn’t sit in the screw holes.
Ordinary galvanised screws rust and leave black streaks in salt air. Closer to the water we use stainless fixings.
Composite boards sag between joists set out for hardwood. We space the joists to the board maker’s span tables.
Boards laid tight swell and cup in winter, and a deck jammed against the house holds water against the wall. We gap the boards and keep the deck off the wall.

We measure up, check the ground and the footings, and check whether it needs a permit.
