Carpenter in Whittington

We have replaced two turned posts to match on a Whittington home, and can keep the suburb’s 1960s houses, units and rentals in good repair. About half of Whittington is under a flood overlay, so we check the rules before outdoor work.

HOW WE HELP IN WHITTINGTON

What we do for Whittington homes

Whittington filled with homes in the 1960s, including more than 500 Housing Commission units, and a quarter of its addresses are now units.

Turned posts matched

Our job in Whittington was replacing two posts so they matched the originals: we had them turned by a wood turner, fitted centre-pin stirrups because the old posts sat straight on the concrete, and undercoated the hidden parts for the owner to finish. Posts sitting in water rot from the bottom, and the stirrup lifts the new ones clear.

Units, rentals and older houses

At the 2021 census 44% of homes were rented, and about a quarter of addresses are units, with 76 new unit addresses since 2017. The typical house block is about 620 square metres. Older houses next to new units need practical repairs, and landlords need itemised quotes they can approve.

The flood overlay

A special building overlay for flooding covers about half of Whittington and more than 1,000 addresses, along streets like Wilsons, Solar, Regent and Townsend. In it, fences, decks, verandahs and pools usually need a permit, though open decks and pergolas on unenclosed foundations, like-for-like replacement fences and some small raised extensions are exempt. We check the address first.

Looking after a school, the aged-care home or a shop in the Wilsons Road centre? That side of our work is on our commercial carpentry page for Whittington.

WHAT CLIENTS SAY

What our clients say

Beyond our expectations, and it was great to work with people who could turn our ideas into something better than we imagined. Couldn’t recommend them highly enough.

Julie Mortimer

Prompt, great communication and a terrific job. Have used JF Maintenance for lots of work over the years and would recommend.

David Meade

Michael worked with our budget and we were so impressed by their diligence and workmanship. They did not cut corners but went the extra mile. So impressed we engaged them again at another property.

WHITTINGTON FAQ

Carpenter Whittington — common questions

Can you match old turned posts?
Yes. In Whittington we had two posts turned to match the originals and set them on centre-pin stirrups so they sit clear of the concrete.
Do I need a permit for a fence or deck in Whittington?
If your address is in the flood overlay, usually yes, though a like-for-like replacement fence, an open deck or a pergola on unenclosed foundations is exempt. We check the address before planning.
Do you work for landlords?
Yes. We give an itemised quote the owner can approve and arrange access with the tenant.
Is my house heritage-listed?
Almost certainly not. Only the former Black Swan Hotel on Boundary Road and St Paul’s church on Wilsons Road have heritage overlays.
Is Whittington bushfire prone?
Only a small strip along Coppards Road is mapped as bushfire prone.
ABOUT WHITTINGTON

About Whittington

The area was once part of Breakwater, also called St Albans, and took the name Whittington in the early 1920s after early landowner James Whittington. It filled with homes in the 1960s, and in about 1999 the land south of Townsend Street became St Albans Park.

The 2021 census counted 3,990 residents with a median age of 42. Sixty-year-old houses, units and a high share of rentals are why the work here is steady, practical repair.
