We build fences, gates and decks on Highton’s sloping blocks, renovate the post-war and 1960s homes on the hills above the Barwon, and look after the homes on Highton’s newer estates. More than 20,000 people live here, and much of the suburb is built on a hill.
Highton runs along the Barwon and across the Barrabool Hills. The slope and the age of the houses set most of the work here.
Highton sits along the Barwon and across the rolling Barrabool Hills, so a lot of blocks fall away from the house. That makes fencing a real carpentry job here: stepped or raked panels, posts set deep on the low side, gates hung so they still close after a wet winter. Fences have come up in 5 of our 46 Highton jobs and gates in 4. Decks on these blocks need the same care with footings and stairs.
Houses reached Highton in the post-war 1950s, drawn by the views over the river valley, and the Bellevue Avenue shops followed in the mid-1960s. Those homes are now 55 to 75 years old, and Highton’s homes average 3.4 bedrooms. The work is doors that have dropped, floors that need attention, and painting alongside the carpentry when a room is being redone.
Cumulus on former Barwon Water land at Basin Rise, Lavender Hill on Colac Road and Highton Green on Pigdons Road have all sold out, and 174 Colac Road was rezoned for housing in 2025. Highton Village is now a housing diversity area allowing up to three storeys. Newer homes need their first decks, fences and screens, and later the re-coats and adjustments that follow.

Beyond our expectations, and it was great to work with people who could turn our ideas into something better than we imagined. Couldn’t recommend them highly enough.
Michael worked with our budget and we were so impressed by their diligence and workmanship. They did not cut corners but went the extra mile. So impressed we engaged them again at another property.
Prompt, great communication and a terrific job. Have used JF Maintenance for lots of work over the years and would recommend.
In 1834 the grazier John Highett built on a hill above the Barwon, and Highton takes its name from a shortening of his. His property became the Montpellier vineyard, and vineyards and orchards were the main work here for decades. The post office opened on 1 December 1864.
Homes arrived in the post-war 1950s, drawn by the hills and the river views. The 2021 census counted 20,736 residents, most in separate houses averaging 3.4 bedrooms, with newer estates and infill still going in. Hillside blocks and 60-year-old family homes are why the work here is fences, decks and renovations.
