We repair timber pergolas that have started to rot, sag or leak: new posts, replacement beams and rafters, fresh roofing sheets and paint to match. Most pergolas can be saved, and a good repair keeps the look of the original.

These four account for most of the repair calls we get. Often it is two or three of them on the one pergola.
The most common repair by far. We prop the beam, cut the old post out, stand a new one on a galvanised stirrup clear of the ground, and paint it to match.
Rot spreads from a post up into the beam it carries, and a beam that is too light for its span sags. We replace the damaged section and the joints around it rather than patching over soft timber.
Polycarbonate sheeting cracks and yellows with age and starts letting water through. We replace the sheets, or wash back the mould on the ones still worth keeping.
Water staining on an inside wall near the pergola usually means the join to the house has failed. We re-flash the join and repair whatever the water has damaged.
Paint hides a lot. We probe every post, beam and joint to find how far the rot actually goes, so the quote covers the real repair and not just the part you can see.
If the soft timber is in a post or two, or one end of a beam, replacing those parts is the sensible job, and the pergola keeps its original look.
When most of the frame is soft, patching it piece by piece won’t last. In Jan Juc the old pergola had rotted past saving, so we built a new one in treated pine to match it. That kind of job sits on our pergolas page.
A few photos of the posts, the beams and any staining get us started.
On site we probe the frame, check the roofing and look at the join to the house.
A written quote for the repair. If replacing makes more sense, we will say so.
Propped, repaired, painted to match and cleaned up, usually without taking the pergola down.

Repairs to a pergola, in the same job as new flashing and trim on the windows and doors of the house to keep the water out. 2023.
