We have got doors latching and locking again in Thomson, and can keep its 1950s estate houses, units and rentals in good repair. Half the homes here are rented, and about a third of addresses now carry unit numbers.
Thomson grew out of a State Housing Commission estate of about 410 homes, finished in 1953, beside East Geelong and Breakwater.
Our job in Thomson was getting a set of doors closing and locking again: we packed the doors at the hinge so the latch caught, then freed up and lubricated every lock, latch and handle. The same fix works on a house door that has dropped and stopped latching.
The typical house lot is about 640 square metres, and about a third of Thomson’s addresses now carry unit numbers, led by Godfrey Street, Ormond Road and Tate Street. A design overlay sets how many dwellings each of 48 listed infill sites can take. Older estate houses and new units side by side need steady repairs and practical upgrades.
At the 2021 census 51% of homes were rented. We give itemised quotes landlords can approve and arrange access with tenants. There is no bushfire or flood overlay to speak of, and one heritage-listed house, at 3 Breakwater Road, has paint controls.

Prompt, great communication and a terrific job. Have used JF Maintenance for lots of work over the years and would recommend.
Beyond our expectations, and it was great to work with people who could turn our ideas into something better than we imagined. Couldn’t recommend them highly enough.
Michael worked with our budget and we were so impressed by their diligence and workmanship. They did not cut corners but went the extra mile. So impressed we engaged them again at another property.
The estate was named after Dr Alexander Thomson, a Geelong settler, and the Thomson post office opened in 1950. A state technical school opened in 1958 and later became the Gordon’s East Geelong campus.
The 2021 census counted 1,606 residents with a median age of 38. Seventy-year-old estate houses, new units and a high share of rentals are why the work here is practical repair done properly.
