Period and heritage buildings need work that matches the original, not a modern patch. These skills came down from Bob Moodie, three generations back, so we repair and rebuild verandahs, fretwork, finials, sash windows, doors, weatherboards and trims to match what is already there, and keep the original wherever it can be saved.

Most heritage work is a mix of these. The common thread is repairing what can be saved and matching what can’t.
Verandah posts, brackets, friezes and fretwork repaired or remade to the original pattern, so a verandah keeps its character when the rotten parts are gone.
Finials, barge boards and gable trims taken down, repaired or copied, and refixed with the roof flashings checked while they are off.
Every part of a sash window: cords, weights, beads, rails, sills, glass and putty, and new sashes made to the old profile.
Ledged and braced doors, panel doors and joinery made to match, hung on the original frames where they are sound.
Old weatherboard and lining profiles matched from stock or milled, cut in so the repair disappears.
Skirtings, architraves, picture rails, VJ boards and timber floors repaired and matched, room by room.

Sound timber stays. Rot is cut back and spliced, so more of the original survives.
Mouldings, boards and beads matched to what is there, run or sourced to the same shape and size.
Ledged and braced doors, mortised frames and putty-glazed sashes are rebuilt the way they were made.
Painted, stained or oiled to match the building, so the new work doesn’t stand out.

What is original, what is sound, and what has to be matched.
Repair, matching and finish set out, with anything uncertain flagged.
Matched to the original and finished to suit the building.
A custom timber door made to match the existing doors of a heritage brick building, hung and painted with the whole frame, and a side section of the frame replaced when it gave way. 2022.
Two finials taken down and the roof flashing checked under them, rotten weatherboard sections replaced with every end primed, and the side gate repaired with a new post. 2019.
A rotted window removed and sent to a joinery for a new sash, the opening covered meanwhile, then the sash fitted and the weatherboards around it replaced. 2025.
The rotten timber panelling under a front bay window replaced, primed and painted to match. 2020.
Steel stairs at a lighthouse prepared, treated for rust and painted, with the safety paperwork done first. 2021.
Water-damaged VJ boards on the external walls replaced, with the skirtings and architraves redone. 2025.
Heritage work usually touches one of these.
