HOW WE HELP NEWTOWN BUSINESSES

Newtown work we take on

Newtown’s commerce is the busy end of Pakington Street, a group of large private schools, offices along West Fyans and Bridge Streets, and old mill sites changing hands.

Offices and community sites

11 of our 28 Newtown jobs have been commercial. For facility managers we have swapped a door for a solid-core slab and re-used its hardware, adjusted locks, mounted meeting-room blinds, fixed shelving, hung whiteboards and cleared gutters on a heavily treed site. One office job needed a Working with Children check before we could start.

Shops on Pakington Street

The Newtown end of Pakington Street has 153 addresses in the shopping zone, and only about 0.3 of its 5.2 hectares sits under a heritage overlay. In Newtown we have rendered a shopfront’s walls straight around the windows ready for tiling, and we have cut down and re-hung a door that had bound up after building movement.

Mills becoming tenancies

The former Returned Sailors and Soldiers Woollen Mill at 403 Pakington Street sold to a Geelong developer for more than $32 million, with plans to keep the mill for shops, hospitality and offices. It is heritage-listed, with external paint controls. The old Union Flour Mill on Latrobe Boulevard was bought in 2023 to be split into tenancies for retail and dining.

WHAT CLIENTS SAY

What our clients say

Beyond our expectations, and it was great to work with people who could turn our ideas into something better than we imagined. Couldn’t recommend them highly enough.

Julie Mortimer

Prompt, great communication and a terrific job. Have used JF Maintenance for lots of work over the years and would recommend.

David Meade

Michael worked with our budget and we were so impressed by their diligence and workmanship. They did not cut corners but went the extra mile. So impressed we engaged them again at another property.

NEWTOWN QUESTIONS

Commercial carpentry in Newtown — common questions

Is my Pakington Street shop under a heritage overlay?
Probably not. Only about 0.3 hectares of Newtown’s 5.2-hectare shopping zone is covered, mainly the Cremorne Hotel and edges of the Eyre and Aphrasia Street heritage areas. We check the address before quoting.
Can you work at a school or childcare centre?
We can. We have worked on a Newtown site that needed a Working with Children check, and we plan noisy work for holidays or after hours.
Do you clean gutters on treed sites?
Yes. We have cleaned gutters and a roof on a heavily treed Newtown site, and on another clean flagged a section that needed extra brackets or another downpipe.
Will you fit out a tenancy in a converted mill?
We can. Partitions, counters, shelving and doors for shops, cafés and offices are all work we take on, and heritage controls are checked first.
Do you work in the suburbs around Newtown?
Yes. We have done 11 jobs in South Geelong, 46 in Highton and 68 in Belmont.
DOING BUSINESS IN NEWTOWN

Newtown’s trades and mills

Tanneries, wool scours and soap works once favoured Chilwell’s river frontages, and Rocky Point had the Albion and Union woollen mills, from 1869 and 1874. The Returned Soldiers and Sailors woollen mill followed in 1922.

Trams served the private schools and the Pakington Street shops until 1956. Those schools and shops are still at the heart of Newtown’s commercial life.
