We can repair shopfronts and verandahs in Portarlington’s town centre, and we fix locks, doors and wet areas for aged care and facility managers, and keep sheds and works depots secure. Most of our Portarlington work so far has been commercial.
Portarlington’s businesses sit in a small town centre, around the harbour and in a light industrial estate on the edge of town.
Our 9 Portarlington jobs include re-fixing a tile in an aged-care ensuite, fitting a new keyed cylinder to a maintenance shed and servicing another lock, building a powder-coated steel door, and removing two skylights and patching the ceiling after water damage. Some came through facility managers.
The Newcombe Street centre is under a design overlay that generally keeps buildings to two storeys, asks for verandahs and awnings without posts where possible, and keeps the traditional narrow shopfronts. Apartment proposals at 49 Newcombe Street were refused in 2021 and again by VCAT in 2023, though a five-storey mixed-use building has been approved at 20–34 Newcombe Street. Several of the old buildings, including the former Family Hotel, the old bakery and a shop at 62 Newcombe Street, have heritage paint controls.
The new pier opened in 2022, the ferry was funded for two more years in 2025 and carries around 120,000 passengers a year, and the recreation reserve, with its extended pavilion, reopened in February 2026. The Grand Hotel, three caravan parks and the golf club all need regular upkeep. In the Rajah Court industrial estate, solid street fences over 1.5 metres need a permit.

Prompt, great communication and a terrific job. Have used JF Maintenance for lots of work over the years and would recommend.
Beyond our expectations, and it was great to work with people who could turn our ideas into something better than we imagined. Couldn’t recommend them highly enough.
Michael worked with our budget and we were so impressed by their diligence and workmanship. They did not cut corners but went the extra mile. So impressed we engaged them again at another property.
Portarlington’s first public jetty opened in 1859, two years after its flour mill began working, and the town has traded on the bay ever since. The fire station was rebuilt in 2019, the pier in 2022, and the recreation reserve pavilion was extended in 2026.
A small town centre with several heritage buildings, hospitality around the harbour and a light industrial estate are why the commercial work here is careful repair, secure doors and well-timed maintenance.
