We have done 10 jobs in Queenscliff, 9 for commercial clients, most of them repairing, rust-treating and repainting heritage structures through a facility manager. Hesse Street’s old shops, the harbour and the grand hotels make up the rest of the town’s trade.
Queenscliff is a small heritage town where commercial work is mostly keeping old buildings sound: shops, hotels, the harbour and civic buildings.
In seven jobs through a facility manager we have filled gaps in vents and eaves, repainted walls, doors and fascias, wire-brushed, rust-treated and repainted old steelwork, repaired missing floor panelling and fitted bird mesh, some of it from a boom lift. Work came with safe work method statements and photo reports where the client asked for them.
The Hesse Street strip has 204 addresses and has been the town’s commercial centre since the 1850s and 1860s. Most of it is in a heritage precinct with outside paint controls. Routine or preventative maintenance needs no permit, but other buildings and works, including a front fence, do, and nothing can go above two storeys or 8.5 metres, a limit a permit cannot vary, except for alterations to an already taller building that don’t raise it. Heritage guidance favours bringing back posted verandahs where they once stood.
The harbour’s zone aims to expand harbour and tourist facilities, and the new ferry terminal, backed by $10 million of federal money, opened in December 2022. Defence has slated Fort Queenscliff for sale, with the museum possibly staying as a condition. Away from those sites, we have replaced a cut section of PVC-coated security fence to match and changed a door lock to suit a utility’s key system.

Michael worked with our budget and we were so impressed by their diligence and workmanship. They did not cut corners but went the extra mile. So impressed we engaged them again at another property.
Prompt, great communication and a terrific job. Have used JF Maintenance for lots of work over the years and would recommend.
Beyond our expectations, and it was great to work with people who could turn our ideas into something better than we imagined. Couldn’t recommend them highly enough.
Bay steamers brought the first excursion crowds to Queenscliff’s five hotels, and the railway later brought many more holiday makers.
Hesse Street holds modest 1860s shops, flamboyant hotels and substantial shops from the boom of the 1880s. That heritage, plus a working harbour, is why most commercial work here is repair and upkeep done to the rules.
