Waurn Ponds’ commercial side is education, health and large-format retail, set among farmland and a working quarry.
Our 13 Waurn Ponds jobs have included unjamming a meter room door, replacing a door with a solid-core one and painting it, building a 26-metre retaining wall 1.4 metres high on engineered galvanised posts, putting up screen panels on concreted posts, and new double doors at a water basin site.
Epworth Geelong sits on its own zone beside Deakin’s Waurn Ponds campus. In 2024 it announced an extra 66 beds and two more operating theatres, and its day oncology unit was set to grow from 10 to 20 chairs from June 2026. Deakin’s campus covers about 365 hectares, and the Gordon TAFE campus, Christian College’s senior school and a cancer centre are also in the suburb.
The Geelong Home Maker Centre, the Waurn Ponds Homemaker Centre and Waurn Ponds Plaza sit in the suburb’s commercial zone. Around them, about 15% of the suburb is under the Waurn Ponds Valley landscape overlay, which looks hard at the siting, colour and height of new buildings, and new homes are meant to be kept 500 metres from the quarry’s working face.

A limestone quarry opened at Waurn Ponds in the 1840s, and Deakin University’s campus arrived in 1977. The railway station opened in 2014, and the line to it was duplicated in sections, with the second platform in use by 2022.
Today the campus, the hospital and the homemaker centres sit side by side on what was farmland and quarry country.
